My dog licks its paws and the pads are dry

What is going on
Your dog's pads are the only thing between its body and the ground. Forty-degree asphalt in July, salt and sand at the beach, wet pavement in November, parquet at home. They are built to take a lot, with thick skin and a layer of oil that keeps them supple. But they are not indestructible.
When that layer is lost, the pad dries, cracks and starts to bother the dog. The dog responds the only way it knows: licking. At first it is an occasional gesture after the walk. Then it becomes a sofa routine, and the hair between the toes turns rust-coloured from saliva. Constant moisture between the toes, in turn, encourages irritation, and the loop closes.
Not all paw licking is about the pads. Sometimes the origin is the skin between the toes, something picked up on the walk, a nail too long that changes the way the dog stands, or the skin in general, as with itching. And sometimes licking is simply a way to settle after a long day.
That is why we start by looking. Pads, spaces between the toes, nails, hair. In good light, after the walk, two minutes. Most of what you find has a simple routine; what does not has a vet.

Summer asphalt can exceed sixty degrees, and de-icing salt or dry sand in winter strip the pad's natural oils.

Warning signs to watch

- Limps, shifts weight between paws or avoids certain surfaces
- One paw licked or chewed insistently
- Nails that touch the floor when walking or curl inward
When to contact a vet
See your vet if you find a deep crack that bleeds, an open wound or an embedded object that does not come out easily, if the paw is swollen, hot or smells bad, if the dog limps or refuses to put weight on it, or if the licking is focused on one paw and started suddenly. A lump between the toes, however small, also deserves a visit.
If the pads keep cracking despite care, or the licking comes with itching elsewhere on the body, the cause may lie in the skin in general and needs the vet's eye. With puppies and senior dogs, when in doubt, ask.

Everyday care
Two-minute check
After the walk, look at pads, spaces between the toes and nails on all four paws. Remove anything stuck with your fingers or blunt tweezers.
Clean and dry
A damp cloth or an alcohol-free wipe to remove dust, salt and pollen; then dry well between the toes. Moisture left behind is what irritates.
Paw balm
A fragrance-free balm formulated for dogs, two or three times a week on dry days or after hot asphalt. Apply a thin layer and distract for a couple of minutes so it is not licked off.
Hair between the toes
In hairy breeds, trim it level with the pad using round-tipped scissors or ask the groomer to do it. Less hair, less moisture, fewer things stuck.
Timing and ground
In summer walk early or at dusk; if the asphalt burns your hand for five seconds, it burns the paw. Prefer earth and grass.
Nails at the right length
Nails should not touch the floor when walking. Check every two weeks; trimming has its own routine.

Is it normal for my dog to lick its paws?
A brief lick after the walk, yes. The proof is in the hair and the skin: if the hair between the toes keeps its colour and the skin stays pink, there is no problem. Once the hair turns rust or the skin reddens, licking has stopped being grooming and deserves a routine.
Can I use my hand cream or petroleum jelly?
Not a good idea. Human creams carry fragrances and ingredients the dog licks off instantly, and petroleum jelly does not penetrate the pad. A dog balm is designed to be safe when licked and to absorb within minutes. One tin lasts a season.
My dog hates having its paws touched. What do I do?
Start below the threshold: touch one paw for a second while the dog eats, then let go. The proof you are progressing is that the paw is not pulled away. In two weeks you hold the paw, in three you apply balm. After that, checking paws is a moment of closeness rather than a struggle.
